2001 Results: Financial Results of the Top 16 Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Companies
Datamonitor, March 2002
According to the International Monetary Fund, worldwide economic growth in 2001 was 3.2 per cent, which is lower than that of the pharmaceutical industry highlighting this sector’s defensive characteristics. However, concerns surrounding the sector, such as key patent expirations and the subsequent threat of generic competition, rising R&D costs and marketing needs, continued to loom. Moreover, the very nature of the pharmaceutical industry means that during an economic slowdown the industry is affected less than other sectors, and the impact is likely to occur in the year or two following. This brief presents the financial results for the top 16 pharmaceutical companies and the top ten biotechnology companies in 2001. Datamonitor analyzes total sales, ethical sales and operating profits, comparing growth rates and the factors that have contributed to each company’s performance. Additionally, each company’s expenditure on R&D in 2001, together with growth over 2000 and proportion as a percentage of total and ethical sales is presented in full.
