Let's Go to the Video
Signals Research Group, LLC, Nov 2009
This is an individual issue from Signals Ahead, which can be viewed by following the link below.
The report provides results from the industry's first independent lab-based video performance benchmark tests of several leading handset platforms. For this research project, the publisher collaborated with Spirent Communications, a leading provider of test and measurement equipment, who provided their Video User Experience (VUE) system and engineering resources.
- The Devices. The publisher tested seven Windows and Symbian-based handsets from Sony Ericsson, Motorola, LG, Samsung, and Nokia with one of these handsets costing as much as $1,000.
- The Videos. Each handset was tested against seven specially created videos with each video played 10 times in order to achieve statistically meaningful and highly quantitative results. the publisher also included three video delivery mechanisms, specifically HSPA, Wi-Fi and playback from the phone's internal memory.
- The KPIs. By using the Spirent VUE system the publisher was also able to obtain results against several key performance indicators (KPIs), including VMOS (comparable to an audio MOS), Average Start Time, A/V Synch (+/-) Faults, Peak A/V Synch (+/-) Fault Times, Average A/V Synch (+/-) Times, Video Missing, and Video Interruptions.
- The Results. The publlisher demonstrates that there are meaningful performance differences with respect to the video playback capabilities of some of the more popular, and expensive, smartphones on the market. Further, the video playback quality of these handsets can be influenced by the video delivery mechanism (3G, Wi-Fi, memory playback) even though the very favorable video transport conditions that they used should have resulted in near identical results.
- Net-Net: the mobile operator isn't necessarily at fault the next time your favorite YouTube video freezes midway through the video.
