Network Centric Warfare: A European Market Executive Analysis
Frost & Sullivan, July 2009, Pages: 176
Booming Opportunities in Network Centric Warfare as it Emerges as the Future of War Fighting
With command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR) becoming central to modern warfare, network centric warfare (NCW) has become the buzzword in the European defence industry. NCW, with its ability to harness the full potential of C4ISR by using evolving technologies, has gained the support of the ministries of defence that do not wish to compromise national security. 'An increasing budget outlay exclusively for NCW is expected in the coming years, providing attractive and long-term business opportunities to market participants,' says the analyst of this research. 'The global defence industry runs on long-term contracts and the course of current contracts is expected to continue running, despite the occasional delays due to the present global economic downturn.'
As there is marked trend toward strategically important technologies, all segments of C4ISR are likely to experience exponential growth in the next three to four years. Certain niche technologies such as UGS are expected to outstrip other technologies due to end-user demand for sophisticated warfare technology. 'The dedicated systems in use at present can integrate multi-mode solutions; however, the challenge is to develop technologies that have greater effectiveness and are cost effective for the end user,' notes the analyst. 'Such dedicated network centric enabling technologies should continue to offer different and/or superior features in terms of C4ISR.'
Companies will be hard pressed to invest on their own future-oriented programmes, as governments are not likely to sponsor research-related activities, but still demand quick and effective solutions. In such a situation, participants will do well to co-operate with other companies in the market in specific programmes. Such partnerships are vital for many reasons. 'Collaboration at all levels of the industry and the government is imperative to not only pool resources but also stave off foreign competition from advanced competitors that are eager to gain a toehold in the lucrative European market,' observes the analyst.
