Competitive Renewable Energy Zones (CREZ) in Texas Driving Wind Power Development

Summary

The creation of Competitive Renewable Energy Zones (CREZ) in Texas will significantly enhance the state’s current transmission capacity which will encourage wind farm development and further lead to increase in wind power installations in Texas. Wind power installed capacity in the state is expected to reach 21,664 MW in 2015 on the back of CREZ program and other federal and state support policies. CREZ came into existence as a part of Senate Bill 20 which was introduced in 2006 is an extension of Senate Bill 7, introduced in 2005. Unlike Senate Bill 7, which made no provision for the development of transmission infrastructure, Senate Bill 20 took this as a legislative strategy. CREZ is the mechanism where the state identified the wind rich zones to expand and construct the transmission network in the coming years so as to promote sustainable renewable energy development in Texas.
