Morocco Tourism Report 2010
Business Monitor International, Nov 2009, Pages: 34
The Morocco Tourism Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, tourism associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on Morocco's tourism industry.
An Upbeat Outlook Data released so far for 2009 show an increase in visitor arrival numbers to Morocco, a great performance when set against the backdrop of the global economic crisis. During January-July 2009 there were 5,083,000 arrivals, up by 8% year-on-year (y-o-y). Still, it seems unlikely that Morocco will be able to post an increase in overall tourist arrival numbers for 2009, instead declining by 7%. Beyond this point, we remain hopeful that the country’s tourism industry can press ahead, bolstered by its cost advantage, stable political situation and a spate of new tourism developments coming on stream in the coming years.
Tourists spent an estimated US$7.34bn in 2008, underlining the importance of tourism to the country’s wider economy. Tourism expenditure contributes to about 8% of GDP, a proportion which we expect to increase over our forecast period through to 2014. Tourism also remains a major source of employment in Morocco. There were about 854,000 people directly employed by the tourism industry in 2008. The outlook for future trends in the tourism sector looks positive. New developments opening as part of the Plan Azur tourism projects will lead to an increase in tourism revenues flowing into Morocco and see create several thousand jobs over the forecast period.
Morocco Top Of BMI’s Ratings For The MEA Region BMI’s new tourism Business Environment Ratings has Morocco in first place for the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region, with a score of 63. The country’s tourism market is performing strongly, even against the of global economic crisis. Market and country risks are low on a regional basis. The Plan Azur developments should ensure continued growth in the Moroccan tourism industry over the forecast period. The only area where the country scores slightly poorly is in the Country Structure component. However, Morocco is taking great strides to improve its tourism infrastructure so we would expect this to improve in future reports.
Vision 2010 And Plan Azur The cornerstone of Morocco’s tourism strategy in the short term is Vision 2010. This programme aims to attract 10mn tourists to the country by 2010. Although this target will not be reached, largely due to the ongoing economic crisis, Morocco should still to be applauded for its ambitious targets in the tourism sector. A key component of Vision 2010 is Plan Azur, which has identified six key resorts to be developed along the extensive Moroccan coastline.
