This Frost & Sullivan research service titled World Microwave Technology Market for Mobile Backhaul provides an in-depth analysis of the market drivers and restraints, industry trends, and competitive environment, in addition to the challenges and issues faced by market participants. In this research, Frost & Sullivan’s expert analysts examine the following segments: circuit-switched microwave, hybrid microwave, and packet microwave.

The key driver of the market is the fact that mobile phones are estimated to have become an integral part of peoples' communication options. In fact, in developing nations, mobile phones are being increasingly used for carrying out businesses especially in the rural areas, personal banking, and in other ways to improve the quality of life.

Market Overview

Data Traffic Explosion Enables Strong Growth in the World Microwave Technology Market for Mobile Backhaul

The world mobile backhaul market is set to witness robust growth, driven by continued mobile subscriber growth, expansion of the mobile broadband sector, and the start of the upgrade to backhaul 4G traffic. The proliferation of devices such as laptops with 3G chipset and iPhones will require service providers to significantly ramp up bandwidth offerings. 3G and 4G devices will be instrumental in revving up bandwidth demands, boosting backhaul traffic. While some of these devices became available in 2008, they will drive real growth in bandwidth starting in 2010 and increasing rapidly thereafter. Microwave has made huge strides as a carrier grade technology, leading to the continued adoption of backhaul networks. Circuit-switched products are likely to exhibit a decline; however, packet technology-based products (pure packet, hybrid and pseudowire) are expected to exhibit a CAGR of 57.0 percent. 'The mobile backhaul market is defined as a rapidly emerging application in the context of migration to next-generation technologies in the backhaul network to support increasing mobile traffic,' notes the analyst of this research service. 'So, while the deployed base of backhaul equipment is approaching late maturity stage, in terms of growth potential from upgrades to the existing networks and new builds, it is defined as an emerging market.' Mobile backhaul is as much a quality of service (QOS) and intelligence issue as it is a capital expenditure/operational expenditure (CAPEX/OPEX) and coverage issue. With 4G access technologies, communication between cell towers will be required, providing vendors with more points on which to compete.

The access network comprises different generations of access technologies; similarly, the backhaul network too is characterized by the presence of multiple protocols. The new builds are expected to be carrier Ethernet/Internet protocol (Ethernet/IP) from day one and the incumbents are expected to migrate the network in phases. This requires time division multiplexing (TDM) and Ethernet services to co-exist. Unpredictability in the migration route that operators adopt has emerged as a prominent challenge for vendors. As incumbents are likely to delay key migration decisions due to the macroeconomic factors, this issue will continue to dominate the market landscape. The inherent latency characteristics of router technology, the costs involved, and the lack of IP in the last mile have made operators cautious about migrating the total traffic over this technology.

Despite the impediments, the migration of backhaul networks from legacy to next generation will continue to fuel market momentum. The hybrid (native TDM and Ethernet support) product segment seems to have received the most traction to meet this requirement and is expected to exhibit the highest growth rate in the microwave market. Hence, microwave equipment vendors would need to have strong product positioning and differentiation strategies to meet the migration requirements of wireless operators. Going forward, service provider requirements will grow more intensive as mobile traffic expands. Vendors must roll out scalable and flexible products that meet the bandwidth, QOS, and other feature requirements.
