World Inline Metrology Markets
Frost & Sullivan, June 2009, Pages: 64
Manufacturers to Work Closely with End user Groups
Instituting a strong and reliable network with local distributors has been a key challenge for inline measurement manufacturers. With the current economic turbulence, market participants are considering establishing partnerships with distributors as a key strategy to achieve high penetration rates. “Manufacturers are positioning themselves as partners to end users, rather than as suppliers of measurement equipment,” notes the analyst of this research. “Accordingly, they can add considerable value by developing a keen insight into end users’ measurement needs.” By working closely with end user groups, suppliers can get first-hand information on future needs. This will help in improved R&D and future product development cycles.
Research indicates that end users prefer absolute measurement inline metrology equipment rather than relative measurement equivalents. However, the importance of absolute measurement varies depending on the applications, for which they are used by various end user sectors. There is a trend among manufacturers in end user industries including automotive, aerospace, shipbuilding and power train to convert manual measuring machines to inline measurement/inspection equipment. Research indicates that end users are likely to opt for automated equipment if the return on investment, sophistication of functionalities and volume of demand are met. However, this trend is anticipated to have a low/medium impact because of the economic slowdown.
Simple, Optimal Solutions Paralleled by Range of Financial Models and Leasing Options to Ensure Market Success
There has been rising demand for refurbished and rental equipment as buyers can save approximately 30 percent to 80 percent of the new equipment price while still being able to receive product support along with warranty conditions similar to when they purchase new equipment. “End users show conservatism when it comes to considering new solutions and changing their existing equipment,” cautions the analyst. “System upgrades or software upgrades are also preferred by end users sectors due to the high investment involved.”
Vendors are expected to suggest simple solutions that best meet the needs of end users. They should also work on convincing end users that such equipment provides return on investment. Manufacturers of inline metrology need to concentrate on the services attached with the products and provide a range of financial models and leasing options.
