China has become the second largest consumer of paper in the world since 2003. The increasing demand in the market has stimulated the continuous development of the paper industry and a growth rate of over 20%. In 2006, there were 3,388 big sized enterprises in the paper and paper products industry with an annual income of 303.8 billion Yuan. The sales income of the paper industry in the period from Jan. to Aug. 2007 was 233.679 billion Yuan, an increase of 21.73% compared with the same period last year and the profit value was 12.453 billion Yuan, an increase of 39.46% than the same period last year.
Currently, China has not applied a quota on the importation of paper products. As long as the products meet inspection and quarantine regulations, they can be traded freely. With the exception of rice paper, all other paper products in the Chinese market are under free competition.
