2007 Annual Survey of the Photofinishing Industry In China - Part 1: Retail Minilab Stores

Photofinishing News, Inc, May 2007, Pages: 81

This report is Part 1 of the 2007 Annual Survey of the Photofinishing Industry In China, "Retail Minilab Stores".

The fourth annual “Survey of the Photofinishing Industry in China” documents the impactful changes occurring in the photofinishing landscape. Photofinishing News’s 2007 Survey is the most broad-reaching and thorough study of China’s photofinishing industry available.

The 2007 Survey covered over 300 retail photofinishers, prolabs, and professional studios throughout China. We also expanded previous scopes to gather more financial, cameraphone printing, dry labs, and Personalized Photo Products data.

Our findings indicate that successful photo retailers have become entrenched in the digital arena demonstrating growth in digital prints and a particularly strong growth in cameraphone prints. Higher digital print prices and a variety of profitable Personalized Photo Products pave the way for revenue streams that maintain a positive financial performance for the industry at large.

The majority of the prolab business comes from photo studios where photobooks, the most popular product, are mostly designed in-house using digitally captured images. Though studios and prolabs are generally in good financial health, prolabs expressed concerns of competition and operating costs as they look towards the future. Close to 12% growth in the average printing volume was conveyed compared to the previous year.

Professional Studios were found to be mostly “digital”, only 10% of the surveyed studios still use film cameras. Almost 38% of the studios have their own Website among which only 20% offer online ordering and sitting reservations.
