Recent acquisition agreements in the global technical textiles sector include the planned takeover by FOV Fabrics of the production and distribution of L Michael’s products, and the decision by Taconic to buy the Alphaglas coated fabrics range from Alpha Associates.

New products include Tencel Sun, a fibre for sportswear which helps to protect against solar radiation and maintains its protection even when the sportswear becomes damp.

In business news, Trützschler has announced a new structure, Argotec intends to restructure its business, Ahlstrom has reduced the workforce at its Karhula plant, and Teijin has announced drastic changes to the global structure of its fibres operations. A patent licensed to Kinetic Concepts relating to the use of foam dressing kits with negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) systems has been ruled invalid. HemCon Medical Technologies has signed a contract allowing Cardinal Health to distribute HemCon products to US hospitals and other health care sites. It has also announced a partnership with Elmarco to develop wound care products made using Nanospider technology. Meanwhile, Avantium and NatureWorks have formed a partnership with the aim of realising the potential of a new generation of polymers made from renewable sources. Nanocomp Technologies has produced and delivered 10 km of its CTex carbon nanotube (CNT) to an unnamed customer while SouthWest NanoTechnologies (SWeNT) will use an equity infusion to develop, manufacture and market new nanotube products. In Japan, Toyota has developed floor mats made from NatureWorks’ Ingeo fibre for its Prius model. In the USA the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Zoll Medical Corporation’s new LifeVest wearable defibrillator. And in China Winner Medical has signed an agreement with a consumer products company relating to the supply of PurCotton rolls. In investment news, Argotec has opened a new headquarters and manufacturing plant which includes clean room facilities, while Surrey NanoSystems has secured funding to commercialise a low temperature process for growing carbon nanotubes.
