The objective of this research service is to evaluate the U.S. brachytherapy market in 2009. This research service identifies major industry challenges, market drivers and restraints, and market and technology trends for existing and emerging participants. It also provides revenue forecasts and market analysis from 2005 to 2011, with 2009 as the base year.

The brachytherapy market encompasses many types of products, but this research service only profiles selected segments listed below:
- High-dose Rate Brachytherapy (HDR)
- Low-dose Rate Brachytherapy (LDR)

Market size estimates for the period 2005-2011 are segmented by product and application, which include:
- High-dose Rate Brachytherapy (HDR)
- Low-dose Rate Brachytherapy (LDR)

Definition

The word BRACHYTHERAPY is derived from the Greek word 'brachios' which means “short”. Brachytherapy is a precise dosage of radiation automatically delivered through an applicator, which is positioned within the body and close to the tumor. This procedure applies a higher dose of radiation directly to the tumor while sparing healthy tissue and surrounding organs. This course of treatment lasts usually four weeks compared to external beam radiation which lasts six to seven weeks. Brachytherapy is often performed on an outpatient basis by itself or combined with other treatments, such as external beam radiation which is often used as a boost to brachytherapy.

Brachytherapy treatment is used for gynecological, breast, brain, head, neck, lung, eye, and prostate cancers. Brachytherapy can be used alone or in conjunction with other cancer treatments. Brachytherapy is sometimes used after surgery to destroy any cancer cells that may remain. Brachytherapy can also be used in conjunction with external beam radiation.

This research service focuses on low-dose-rate permanent seeds implantation used in prostate cancer treatment and high-dose rate temporary seeds implantation in post-surgical procedures for breast and brain cancer treatment.

Two Types of Brachytherapy:

- Permanent brachytherapy is primarily used in the treatment of prostate cancer.
- Temporary brachytherapy is primarily implemented in post-surgical treatment of breast cancer.

Brachytherapy Treatment Delivery:
- Low-dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy uses software to guide the placement of permanent seeds, which remain in the body.

- High-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy places a thin catheter in the tumor, which is connected to a HDR afterloader. The radioactive Iridium source is pushed through the end of the catheter controlled by a computer. The length of time that the source remains inside the patient is dependent on the dosage needed to be delivered. The radioactive source used in this procedure is much stronger than permanent seed implant. This technique is typically performed on an outpatient basis.

- Pulsed dose rate (PDR) brachytherapy is a treatment similar to HDR brachytherapy. The radioactive source used during the treatment is less radioactive resulting in a longer treatment time than the HDR treatment.
