This Frost & Sullivan research service titled European Tactical Communication Market Assessment provides a quantitative overview of radio communications and tactical networks spending in the European markets. This research service also identifies the key market drivers, restraints, industry challenges and opportunities, and analyses their impact. It provides key findings, strategic insights, and a set of actionable recommendations for companies aiming to enter the regional defence communication market. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following markets: personal role radio communications, combat net radio communications, and tactical networks. The technologies covered in this research service are: software defined radio, system of systems integration, and microwave technology.

Market Overview

In spite of the Economic Slump the European Tactical Communication Market is set to Witness Growth

The economic downturn has left the European tactical communications market undeterred and stable and is anticipated to experience steady growth. The European Ministries of Defence (MODs) are earnestly acquiring the tactical communication (TACCOM) capability due to the increased recognition of networked communication as a force multiplier, spurring the regional defence communication market to grow steadily to reach $1.58 billion by 2018. “Radio technology closes in towards networked communication capability through high capacity data radio (HCDR),” says the analyst of this research. “Products such as high band networking radio, personal role software defined radio, and tactical network (TacNet) solutions are likely to drive a transformational shift in the TACCOM landscape.”

These products set up TacNet architecture in the theatre of operation, where all radio sets including vehicular and airborne as well as satellite communication (SATCOM) terminals are used as nodes. The network also integrates existing command and control (C2)/battle management systems (BMS), and air defence communication systems into a single IP environment enabling seamless transmission of voice, data, and video contents in the last tactical mile. Radio technology is enabling integration of tactical communication and elements of situational awareness at the soldier level. This means that navigation, imagery and identification sensors are increasingly being incorporated into the soldier communication gear, thereby blurring the boundary among tactical communication, navigation, and sensors at the frontline. Such integration will enable all sections of soldiers to be well-informed and reduce sensors to decision-makers to shooters lag through a continuous feed of battle intelligence.

Defence Companies to have a Comprehensive Understanding of Through-life Capability Management

The integration of varied legacy radio systems is a challenge for this market. The market participants are looking at projects like the joint tactical radio system (JTRS) in the United States to overcome the challenge of integration and act as a universal standard by using software-defined architectures and logics, although this is yet to materialise. The issue of interoperability and integration depends on uniform standards, specifications and procurement regulations, which are yet to be fully implemented by the European MODs. “Various radio waveforms are currently under evolution and a system of systems integration solutions has yet to become fully effective,” explains the analyst. “Several European countries have resorted to the ‘wait-and-see approach’ for clarity on the direction the communication technology will take.”

It is imperative for the defence companies to understand the nuances of through-life capability management (TLCM). “MODs are increasingly putting the onus of their equipment management (from initial purchase to routine maintenance, and end-user training to interim capability upgrades) onto the supplier companies,” concludes the analyst. “Therefore, it is essential for the companies to understand the cost implications of service delivery at various stages of the equipment life cycle (i.e. the total cost of ownership), for them to effectively manage project risk and become more profitable.”
