Market Overview
Strong Pipeline Attracts the Big Pharma to the Colorectal Cancer Market
The lack of a successful adjuvant therapy to cater to a new class of patients is restricting any potential expansion growth of the colorectal cancer market. However, the strong clinical pipeline, large unmet medical needs, and considerable interest from across the tiers, especially the Big Pharma companies, are setting the stage for greater penetration of colorectal cancer therapies within existing segments. “In addition to targeted therapies and cytotoxics, market participants need to focus on improving the quality of adjuvant therapies,” says the analyst of this research. “This segment has historically been driven by the inexpensive 5-fluororacil (5-FU), but recently there has been a shift toward more expensive therapies with the expansion of targeted therapies in the first, second, and third-line therapy markets.”
So far, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies have failed to develop an adjuvant therapy for stage II patients. This has restricted market expansion, since this stage represents the largest segment of colorectal cancer patients without any access to a drug that can reduce the risk of recurrence. Although several drugs are currently in trials, none has made it to the final stages of product development. The failure of the hugely successful first-line drug Avastin (bevacizumab) in phase III trials for use as an adjuvant therapy in combination with FOLFOX further illustrates the complexity of this challenge. “Despite the challenges faced, the strong clinical pipeline comprising of combination therapies as well as new candidates augurs well for the market,” notes the analyst. “As more patients are being diagnosed through better screening and increased penetration of the approved therapies, the market is further stabilizing and attracting greater attention from across tiers of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.”
