- According to the reports estimates, total raw material and ingredient sales to the U.S. nutrition industry reached $8.6 billion in 2008 on 11% growth. Prices of many raw materials spiked in 2008 as the value of the dollar declined and supply tightened for many products, such as vitamins.
- While the total U.S. consumer supplement market grew 6.2% in 2008 to $25.2 billion, sales of raw materials and ingredients used in supplement increased by 9.2% to $2.9 billion. This is the highest growth rate that the supplement raw material industry has experienced since 1997 when NBJ reported a growth of 15.4%. From 1997-2008, supplement ingredient sales experienced an average annual growth rate of 2%.
- According to the report estimates, U.S. consumer sales of functional ingredients grew 7.2% to $36.8 billion in 2008. Comparatively, raw material functional food sales increased 10.7% to $799 million. Growth was9.4% in 2007 and 10.2% in 2006.
The world is changing for companies that manufacture and supply raw materials and ingredients for the U.S. nutrition industry—and 2009 is proving to be another eventful year for the raw material & ingredient supply industry. Whether they manufacture raw materials or move ingredients into the market as brokers and distributors, supply companies face a number of opportunities and challenges created by everything from growing consumer concerns over supply safety to the continued impact of new supplement good manufacturing practices on the ingredient supply chain. Raw material suppliers also must deal with the issue of rising input costs and the effect of currency fluctuations while facing reduced or delayed purchase orders from their finished product customers.
