Biodiesel in Brazil: A Rising Tide? Part I: Food vs. Fuel
Atalaia Research, May 2008, Pages: 23
In this first part of a three part series, the publisher addresses two key questions regarding supply and demand for Biodiesel in Brazil. First, how is demand for Biodiesel being created in Brazil? Second, does Brazil have sufficient arable land for cultivation of biofuel feedstock to meet the demand? Regarding demand, the publisher explaina how the Brazilian government is creating an opportunity for the Biodiesel industry in Brazil. Regarding supply, the publisher addresses the “Food vs. Fuel” debate and its impact on the Biodiesel industry. In a similar fashion as the sugar cane ethanol industry in the 1970s, the Brazilian government is creating demand for Biodiesel and providing financial incentives for investment in the Biodiesel supply chain. The Food vs. Fuel debate is essentially a discussion about the availability of arable land to grow both food and biofuel feedstock without destroying rainforests and other natural resources. For the biofuel industry, including Biodiesel, to thrive, sufficient arable land for both food and biofuel feedstock cultivation must be available.
Report Insights - Develop a better understanding of key industry drivers and be in a better position to determine if the Brazilian Biodiesel industry presents a solid investment opportunity. - Get a deep understanding of the Biodiesel industry in Brazil and Biodiesel in general, its impact abroad, and the Brazilian government’s support for it. - Understand Biodiesel feedstock and the land required to satisfy demand.
Executive Summary - This is the first of a three part series that addresses the principal drivers of the Biodiesel industry in Brazil. With this three part series, the publisher intends to determine if the industry is currently offering fertile investment opportunities in Brazil. This first part addresses the demand for biodiesel in Brazil and the “Food vs. Fuel” debate and its impact on the industry. - The Biodiesel industry in Brazil is being created by government initiatives that are very similar to those that created the Sugar Cane Ethanol industry in Brazil. - The publisher's analysis also suggests that the Brazilian government will remain highly motivated to continue the initiatives that are creating an opportunity for the Biodiesel industry. - At its core, the Food vs. Fuel debate is about the availability of land for the cultivation of food and raw materials for biofuel production, including Biodiesel and ethanol. - The publisher performed an analysis of land available for agriculture and forecasted the demand for this land in Brazil through the year 2030. Based on this analysis, the publisher concluded that sufficient land exists for production of both food and biofuel raw materials through the year 2030 and beyond.
Therefore, the publisher concludes that: - The market size and other demand characteristics and the availability of arable land for both food and biofuel feedstock production satisfies the characteristics of a Rising Tide, and support that conclusion that the Biodiesel industry in Brazil is offering attractive investment opportunities. - In the next two parts of this three part series, the publisher will address the remaining key drivers of the Biodiesel industry in Brazil.
