There is clearly a considerable burden on health care, the economy, and individual patients and their carers as a result of respiratory diseases. In the United Kingdom, one in five deaths occurs as the result of respiratory disease, with more deaths occurring from this group of disease than from coronary heart disease or non-respiratory cancers. The UK death rate from respiratory disease is one of the highest in Europe (estimated to be around twice the European Union average) and it appears that this is a burden which is increasing, in contrast with coronary heart disease, where the relative burden is falling. However, it is the morbidity and the health costs of respiratory disease that have enormous consequences for individuals and the health services. It is estimated that around one in eight admissions to the acute sector is a consequence of respiratory disease, and there are also many consultations and house calls in primary care.

This book looks at the more common respiratory diseases that are seen, both in the hospital sector and in primary care. It is written by specialists involved directly in patient care. It is not an exhaustive manual, given the breadth and range of respiratory disorders with which patients present, but it does detail the more common presenting problems and their care, management and treatment. Each chapter is useful as a standalone text and contains a full list of references.

What is apparent is that respiratory patients present in all specialties and that all health care professionals will look after patients with respiratory conditions, either as an acute event or as the consequence of chronic disease. It is hoped that this will be a useful reference book for students, nurses and other health care professionals with an interest in respiratory disease and its care, management and treatment.
