Fundamental Aspects of Pain Assessment & Management
Quay books, Jan 2007, Pages: 175
Pain can have a devastating effect on a person’s quality of life. A substantial proportion of the patients that health care professionals come into contact with suffer some sort of pain and this pain is not always related to the reason why the patient is consulting the health professional.
Inadequate assessment and knowledge are the most frequent reasons for poor pain management. Nurses play a vital role in both the assessment and management of pain. They can make a real difference in patients’ lives by ensuring that their patients receive optimum levels of pain relief.
Providing information about a range of issues related to the many aspects of pain, this book is designed to introduce the reader to an overview of the different types of pain, the theory of pain and its assessment and subsequent management. The chapters are written by specialists who are actively involved in patient care within specific areas. The authors share their expert knowledge and hands on experience with the reader. The book is intended to be read by student and newly qualified nurses and any other health care professionals who recognise a deficit in their knowledge. It can be read as a whole, giving sound knowledge on a broad spectrum of pain issues or it can be read by students who wish to update their knowledge in one specific area.
Chapter 1 introduces the reader to the basic science of pain. Anatomy and physiology are discussed relating theory to practice to enhance understanding.
Chapter 2 outlines the pharmacological treatments available across a broad spectrum including the unique role of the nurse in optimising analgesia.
Chapters 3 and 4 introduce the assessment and management of acute pain explaining the importance of treating acute pain quickly in order to prevent it from becoming chronic.
Chapters 5 and 6 introduce the assessment and management of chronic pain. Chapter 7 gives an overview of the many aspects of pain in palliative care including assessment and management of the different types of malignant pain, including spiritual pain, and discusses ethical considerations.
Chapter 8 gives an overview of the assessment and treatment of pain in children, neonates and babies. Including pharmacological and non- pharmacological methods, it explains the importance of encompassing the needs of the whole child in order to improve pain relief.
Chapter 9 discusses the importance of physiotherapy in the long-term management of chronic pain. Any patient in pain will have an emotional reaction to that pain, which can range from mild anxiety to severe distress, depression and negative thinking.
Chapter 10 identifies the psychological aspects of pain and why the use of psychological and behavioural techniques can assist with pain management.
Chapter 11 introduces the reader to the use of complementary therapies in the health care setting and discusses which therapies may be useful in the treatment of pain. Each chapter links theory to practice. The use of case studies encourages readers to reflect on examples within their practice setting, thinking about how the patient’s pain was managed and considering the issues involved. It is hoped that the time spent reflecting will help to influence and improve future pain management.
A summary of key points with implications for nursing practice are given at the end of each chapter.
This book is intended as an introduction to pain. It is hoped that it gives the reader an appetite to explore this challenging area of nursing in more depth and to use this knowledge to improve the management of patients in pain.
