EMC Acquires a Unifying Risk and Compliance Management Platform with Archer Technologies

On January 4, 2010, EMC and Archer Technologies began the New Year with the announcement of EMC’s intention to acquire Archer, a leader in Governance, Risk Management and Compliance (GRC) software. Terms were not disclosed.
With this acquisition, EMC gains a dominant enabling platform for the management of risk and compliance strategy. It aligns not only with RSA, but with EMC’s core interests in information management, considering the volume of information under the management of GRC-enabling tools. Its role in supporting risk and compliance strategists can therefore be expected to become a point of unification across the EMC portfolio. While the deal validates the interest of major vendors in technologies that support GRC interests, Archer is one of the most recognized names in the space, and its alignment with an industry leader bodes better for EMC, a preferred vendor for many enterprises, than perhaps for some of Archer’s competitors in a space that has seen its challenges in understanding and acceptance. Archer has succeeded in this environment because the distinctive adaptability of the Archer SmartSuite platform provides much-needed capability for managing the multiple demands of risk management and compliance in a number of domains. This adaptability has won a particularly active and vocal user community for an acquisition which could have a provocative impact on EMC’s direction going forward.
