IBM Expands Security in its Information-Led Transformation Framework with Guardium
Enterprise Management Associates, Dec 2009, Pages: 5
On November 30, 2009, IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced that it acquired privately held Guardium, a company based out of Waltham, MA, for an undisclosed amount. Guardium’s technology helps clients safeguard data, monitor database activity and reduce operational costs by automating regulatory compliance tasks.
IBMs Information-Led Transformation framework, supported by the Business Analytics and Information Management software divisions, is in part the result of a number of substantial IBM investments in expanding its data center-centric dominance. These, in turn, have been complemented by IBM’s Security Framework strategy—where information assurance is a top priority—bolstered by a number of high-profile acquisitions in multiple domains, including that of Internet Security Systems in 2006.
A natural extension to these technologies was the necessity to monitor, audit and protect database activity.
With this capability, the acquisition of Guardium bridges IBM’s information management and security framework efforts. The move not only further clarifies IBM’s security focus on the data center, but also accentuates the company’s emphasis on Information Management, and reflects the concerns IBM’s most significant customers have about the assurance of information on which the business directly depends.
Competitors will likely focus on IBM gaps such as the integration of network defense specific to applications, and IBM’s challenges in endpoint security and complementary domains such as network and endpoint Data Loss Prevention (DLP), considering the relevance of these fields to information protection. Perhaps further integration of Watchfire, ISS and Guardium technologies will help close gaps in network application protection that competitors such as Imperva are likely to emphasize. On balance, however, the strengths highlighted by this deal clearly signal that IBM is poised to lead a charge in Information Management, complemented by assets for securing the data center that will pose a substantial challenge to competitors both large and small, and making IBM a force to be reckoned with in the assurance of business-critical information.
