On December 11, 2009, Microsoft Corporation (NASD:MSFT) announced a definitive agreement to acquire Opalis Inc., the leading independent vendor of IT Process Automation (ITPA) software. This acquisition brings together the deep data center automation (DCA) expertise of Opalis with the integrated physical and virtual data center management capabilities of Microsoft’s System Center.

IT Process Automation (ITPA) is a data center automation (DCA) discipline that can replace many manual, resource-intensive, and error-prone activities across multiple IT components, disciplines, and departments. EMA research shows that ITPA delivers exceptional results in both physical and virtual data centers.

This space has been gaining interest, both expanding and consolidating, for some time, as evidenced by significant development and acquisition activity from Novell, HP, BMC Software, NetIQ, Symantec, IBM, and CA.

This is an excellent move by Microsoft, and will certainly make their customers happy as they gain an exceptional solution which delivers proven and exceptional benefits. For Opalis customers, it will be a major change, but is likely to be a positive outcome overall. This is, however, a huge blow for competitors, which will have to hustle to respond.

This EMA Impact Brief provides deep coverage of this acquisition, its implications for Microsoft and Opalis, for their customers, and for the competitors.
