On December 8th, 2009, Novell Inc (NASDAQ:NOVL) announced their strategy and product roadmap for addressing what they referred to as “the emerging market for Intelligent Workload Management (IWM) solutions.” This announcement comes hot on the heels of a seriously lackluster financial performance in 2009, but also reacts to the increasing enthusiasm for virtualization and cloud computing.

Novell claims that this Intelligent Workload Management (IWM) approach is uniquely able to integrate identity and systems management into an application workload, increasing the workload's security and portability across physical, virtual and cloud environments. As a result, Novell aims to allow enterprises to reduce risk and management effort, especially when working across multiple environments, while granting their users “secure and compliant access to the full computing services.'

Novell faces a number of challenges in this new direction – including a low take-up rate for cloud computing, and stiff competition from competitors such as IBM, EMC, Microsoft, and even Oracle. However, it brings unique capabilities (especially around security) and strong capabilities for foundational elements of what EMA calls ‘the responsible cloud’ – an approach to cloud computing based on virtualization, automation, and service management that is automated, well-managed, secured, and compliant.

Novell has excellent products to deliver this message, and while it is a high-risk change in direction, Novell is as well positioned as any vendor to stake a claim to what they label ‘Intelligent Workload Management’ (IWM), especially in the responsible cloud.
