Rest-of-World and Asia Pacific Semiconductor Automated Test Equipment Markets
Frost & Sullivan, Oct 2009, Pages: 39
This Frost & Sullivan research service titled Rest-of-World and Asia Pacific Semiconductor Automated Test Equipment Markets provides analysis on product segments, end-user segments, and market ranking of participants. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following applications: memory ATE, non-memory ATE, and discrete ATE.
Market Overview
Escalating Demand from India and China Sustains Growth in Asia Pacific and the Rest-of-World Semiconductor Automated Test Equipment Markets
As production of semiconductors is increasing in Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRIC countries), the Asia Pacific and rest-of-world (ROW) semiconductor automated test equipment (ATE) markets are poised for high growth. While the repercussions of the downtrend in the U.S. economy were felt in the European, Asia Pacific, and ROW markets, countries such as China and India offer more growth potential compared to their western counterparts. There is an increasing need for bandwidth with growing usage of several applications such as video, audio, and online content. Hence, broadband communication is expected to be a major contributor to the growth of test solutions. The demand for DDR3 will stoke innovation and encourage the development of more test solutions.
'Indications point to a huge demand upswing for DDR3 standard-based memory testers in the future,' notes the analyst of this research service. 'To assist end users in testing high-speed capacity, DDR3 offers more capability than its earlier version, DDR2.' In order to address the trend toward the demand for DDR3, vendors have to roll out platform-oriented test systems that can prevent the old equipment from becoming obsolete. While DDR3 represents approximately 5 percent of the current DRAM memory unit production, its contribution is expected to grow to 70 percent in the foreseeable future.
In the current cost-centric semiconductor market, all the large semiconductor vendors are concentrating on the Asia Pacific countries for manufacturing. However, the economic downturn has forced vendors to reduce the capital expenditure (CAPEX) in this region as well, thereby leading to a decrease in the demand for semiconductor ATE. Besides, there has been an oversupply of memory devices in the current market scenario. This is likely to impact the growth of the memory devices market in the short term, thereby reducing the need for further testing of these devices. The consolidated semiconductor ATE market is confined to very few Tier 1 participants. Apart from this, the complex nature of testing and the CAPEX issue are making it difficult for new entrants to foray into the low-cost test equipment market.
DRAM, microprocessors, and flash for solid-state drive are anticipated to be the major factors pushing PC sales. With the reduction in the number of chips in a system and the growing integration of features and functionality in a chip, there is a need for cost-effective test systems to test these complex chips. NAND memory is another area where growth is expected in the near term in the North American semiconductor ATE market. 'Time-to-market assumes critical proportions in the market today, and testing several components simultaneously will considerably boost ATE market prospects,' says the analyst. 'Vendors must focus on developing test solutions that test both flash and memory with the help of a single ATE.' Key criteria for the successful deployment of ATE are low cost, high performance, and high voltage test capacity. Competition in this market is mainly ascertained by the requirements for higher speed and more accurate test capabilities while reducing the price of testers. Mergers and acquisitions will enable the development of diverse test solutions to meet the evolving needs of end users.
