The ITU, which is the United Nations' agency for ICT issues, is working to formalize a global standard to measure ICT's carbon footprint. Ovum believes that a common methodology would be an important first step in raising green IT awareness among organizations and enabling them to monitor the carbon footprint of their business operations more closely.

Scope

- Discusses current and future methodologies to measure the carbon emissions associated with ICT equipment globally, and their impact on businesses.

- Assesses the importance of a standard method of measurement of ICT's carbon footprint to end-user organizations and the green IT industry.

- Discusses how the green IT industry may combat the problems of greenhouse gas emissions more broadly, not just those attributable to ICT.

Highlights of this title

Currently, no common methodology exists to measure the carbon dioxide emissions from all types of ICT equipment.

The ITU is urging delegates at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen to support what it hopes will become a standardized methodology.

Ovum believes that a common methodology would be an important first step in raising green IT awareness among organizations and enabling them to monitor the carbon footprint of their business operations more closely.
