Investing in Stem Cell Companies in 2010 and Beyond
BioPolaris, Feb 2010, Pages: 114
Stem cell market is on the brink of explosion. The first approval of stem cell-based therapeutic product will push the whole market forward not only financially but also acceptance of stem cells as the mode of therapy and eventually prevention of a variety of diseases by general public will increase.
And this will happen relatively soon. Presently there are over 160 stem cell-based therapeutic products undergoing development, with 27 of them in the phase II or III clinical trials.
In the near future, stem cell therapeutic products will affect the major health care segments, including cardiovascular, stroke and diabetes. Anticipated reduce in gross domestic product (GDP) between 1 and 5% in low and middle income countries will be caused by heart diseases, stroke and diabetes, as many people will die prematurely. For example, it is estimated that between 2006-2015, China will lose at least $558 billion of its national income due to the combination of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. The most recent data from the American Heart Association’s Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics 2008 update reveals that projected cost related to heart diseases in 2009 will grow to more than $304.6 billion, including health care services, medications, and lost productivity. Direct medical cost of treating patients with diabetes is expecting to triple in next 25 years, going from $113 billion today to $336 billion per year in the USA alone. Stem cell market consists of three sectors: stem cell-based therapeutic sector, stem cell banking sector and stem cell-based products and services providers sector. Each sector has its own characteristics, risk factors and different potential for growth.
