Market Overview

Asia Pacific Emerges as a Fertile Breeding Ground for Data Center Service Providers

The data center co-location and managed hosting services market in the Asia Pacific has been witnessing high growth for almost a decade. The data center market has grown in tandem with the rise in business and Internet subscribers in the region. The countries that have emerged as data center hubs are Japan, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and to a lesser extent China, India, and Malaysia. The market has been relatively insulated from the effects of the economic downturn due to the disparity between supply and demand and the high entry barriers. In fact, the market in most countries was powered by strong domestic growth with Singapore and Hong Kong continuing to be the regional hub for data centers. Both emerging (Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, India, and China) and mature markets are becoming evidently service-oriented, with managed hosting and value-added services gaining at the cost of co-location services.

Governments across Asia have been encouraging the improvement of information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure by undertaking initiatives such as ‘e-governance’, ‘e-ready’ nations and next-generation broadband. Such active government backing has attracted huge ICT investments in the Asia Pacific, which has, in turn, aided the development of content and applications. “This scenario has spawned an Internet-savvy population that demands rich content, collaboration, and other web applications,” says the analyst of this research. “This demand is the primary driver of the growth in data center space in the Asia Pacific region.” The Internet/media and Telco/IT verticals together contribute up to 45 percent of the demand. These verticals are still growing at a fast pace in almost all the Asia Pacific countries and are expected to continue contributing significantly over the next four to five years

Despite these promising prospects, data center operators will be challenged by the high cost of operations, which have increased exponentially in recent times. Power costs can often account for more than 50 percent of the overall operational expenditure (opex) of a data center, while real estate pricing could also inflate the opex to a great extent. Ironically, in Asia, the larger data centers tend to be based in the most expensive cities – Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, and Sydney. Apart from the huge opex, disruptive technologies pressure existing data centers to upgrade or alter their facilities continuously to keep pace with the evolution of technologies. For instance, many data centers have been compelled to upgrade their cooling system to meet the demand for blade servers.

“New concepts such as virtualization, green data center, and utility computing have been emerging in the data centre market,” notes the analyst. “The focus on green initiatives has moved rightly in the direction of cost savings than corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the past 12 months.” The new concepts are primarily initiated by the global system integrators and telecom operators that realize the market potential. However, not many customers have bought into these initiatives due to their inadequate compliance, lack of governance, as well as the vast budget and skills required for the implementation and maintenance of the technologies in their facilities. Their reluctance is compounded the shortage of IT experts with significant knowledge of complex data center management. Although some countries such as Singapore have alleviated this problem through flexible immigration policies, most developing countries suffer from lack of skilled labor. Meanwhile, countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, and India have been positioning themselves as strong contenders in the data centre services off-shoring market through investments in telecom and power infrastructure.
