The International Journal of Training Research is now published twice a year on behalf of Australian Vocational Education and Training Research Association (AVETRA). The journal publishes articles which advance our knowledge and understanding of vocational education and training in Australia and internationally. The journal focuses on current or recently completed research and reviews of research in vocational education and training.

AVETRA is Australia's national, independent association of researchers in vocational education and training (VET).

The journal has been edited by Professor Andy Smith (School of Business, University of Ballarat) since it's inception in 2003. Now in it's seventh volume, Associate Professor Peter Kell (International Centre for Lifelong Learning Research and Development, Hong Kong Institute of Education) has been appointed as the new Editor to commence with the first edition of 2010 (volume 8).

The International Journal of Training Research began as the Journal of TAFE Research and Development in the early 1980s when it was published by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research in Adelaide. In 1992, the journal changed its focus and name to the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Vocational Education Research under the editorship of Professor John Stevenson (Griffith University) published by NCVER. In 2002 the journal underwent a further transformation changing its name to International Journal of Training Research, passing to AVETRA as the leading national body representing VET researchers.

AVETRA was established in 1997 with initial financial assistance from the Australian National Training Authority Research Advisory Council and receives support from the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER). AVETRA is Australia's only national, independent association for research in vocational education and training, brings together research stakeholders and researchers from the TAFE, university, industry and government sectors.

With a substantial and growing membership, it is committed to:

- furthering the contribution of VET research to the development of Australian VET policy
- independently reviewing VET research priorities
- promoting independent and significant research in VET, with due regard for the intellectual property rights of researchers
- raising the profile of VET research in the academic and training communities
- promoting training in research methods for those working in or with the VET sector
- providing platforms for the dissemination of research findings
