This annual edition of “Labour Force Statistics” provides detailed statistics on population, labour force, employment and unemployment, broken down by gender, as well as unemployment duration, employment status, employment by sector of activity and part-time employment. It also contains participation and unemployment rates by gender and detailed age groups as well as comparative tables for the main components of the labour force.

Data are available for each OECD member country and for OECD-Total, Euro area and European Union. The time series presented in the publication cover 20 years for most countries. It also provides information on the sources and definitions used by member countries in the compilation of those statistics. This is the 45th edition of Labour Force Statistics since the first issue in October 1961.

This publication is divided into two parts:

Part 1 contains summary tables showing the same aggregates for all OECD Member countries as well as for three country groupings (OECD-total, European Union and Euro area) for the years 1985 to 2008.

Part 2 contains tables by country for the years 1988 to 2008; each country has four or five basic tables. The tables are standardised for all countries. Table I presents population data and its component change. Table II presents the main labour force components, part-time employment and unemployment duration series. Table III presents time series for Participation rates and Unemployment rates by age and sex. Table IV presents civilian employment broken down by professional status and activity according to ISIC Revision 2. Table V presents civilian employment and employees data broken down by activity according to ISIC Revision 3.
