Highlights of this title
Despite a fall in consumption of both petrol and diesel, fuel sales value increased by 7% in 2008 on the back of high pump prices. Service station network expanded through 2008 and 2009 and Repsol continues to be the largest player. With over 70% of fuel sales deriving from the top three players, Spain is a concentrated market.
Over 40% of Spain's fuel volume is sold through Repsol branded stations. Cepsa and BP are the other significant players, accounting for almost 30% of the total fuel sold. Galp's acquisitions of Exxon Mobil and Agip will push it into fourth place in terms of market share. All major players, except BP, operate sites on the motorway.
Three quarters of Spain's service stations have a shop. Repsol has a 30% share of the shop on site network and provides facilities for customers to cook and eat their own food. Repsol and Galp also provide TV and Wi-Fi facilities. Cepsa offers a complete shop offering through its DEPASO brand. Half of all fuel stations have car wash facilities.
