Hong Kong Information Technology Report Q1 2010
Business Monitor International, Jan 2010, Pages: 53
Business Monitor International's Hong Kong Information Technology Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, information technology associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on Hong Kong's information technology industry.
Market Overview The Hong Kong IT market is forecast by BMI to grow from around US$4.5bn in 2010 to US$5.6bn in 2014. Sales were forecast to pick up in Q409, due to a revival in business and consumer confidence. The government sector was expected to lead the way, bolstered by healthier consumer spending and stronger demand from small and medium businesses.
In 2010, there could be a boost - particularly in the second half of the year - from computer hardware tenders delayed from 2009. The launch of Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system in October 2009 has the potential to help trigger a new cycle of hardware upgrades, although much will depend on business confidence. By the end of 2009, surveys showed signifiacntly better business sentiment and signs of local computer shipments trending up. The IT market will be supported by initiatives encouraging the integration of Hong Kong's economy with its large neighbour and the abolition of taxes on cross-border trade. Recent integration of PCs with wireless networking technologies and the roll-out of 3G mobile networks and popular converged services such as Internet Protocol television (IPTV) are also drivers. Industry Developments
Government IT spending for the 12 months to March 2009 was estimated at HKD5.49bn, up from HKD4.09bn in the previous fiscal year. In 2009, projects being implemented by Hong Kong public sector organisations included development of a city-wide system for sharing electronic health records and an e-procurement system for the office of the Chief Information Officer.
Moves to increase the number of mainland residents visiting Hong Kong by making it easier for them to apply for visas was expected to provide a boost to the Hong Kong computer market. Many mainlanders visit Hong Kong to purchase notebook computers as well as digital cameras and other devices. The visa reform was widely perceived as a gesture by Beijing to help Hong Kong fight the economic crisis. Competitive Landscape
Most vendors reported an improvement in trading conditions in the second half of 2009 and expected stronger consumer spending to support a relatively strong final quarter. Samsung reported a positive trend in its local technology sales, led by steady demand from the government sector. Meanwhile, Lenovo predicted a wave of business hardware upgrades in the second half of 2010, with some delayed from 2009
