Biocides in Paint 2010
Biocide Information Limited, March 2010, Pages: 90
The Biocides industry had a difficult year as margins are being squeezed by increasing raw material costs and producers lowering selling prices in order to maintain volumes. In addition, the Biocides industry had to contend with increasing regulatory pressures and lower demand as a result of the economic downturn.
For the future, most Biocide manufacturers are 'positive' on this market due to favourable trends and major customers reporting some optimism going into 2010. The leading global paint company Akzo Nobel, recently reported that sales are starting to grow in most of their markets. As a result, customers are slowly rebuilding inventories to meet expected demand. The favourable trends include the continual movement to water based formulations and the restrictions on cheaper “commodity” type Biocides. While it may be difficult to develop new Biocides, there is a lot of development work going on to find the right combination of Biocide actives and new formulations to adapt to end-user demands.
The global consumption of Biocides in Paint has grown significantly over the last decade. This performance reflects not only end industry growth, regulatory and technological changes but also the growing use of Biocides as hygiene aids in Coatings. The market for Biocides in Paints will continue to grow due to the switch from solvent based to water based systems, the replacement of traditional Biocides based on chlorine and formaldehyde to more expensive environmentally friendly Biocides and the increased usage of hygienic coatings which contain surface active materials.
Specialty biocides include algaecides, incan bactericides, insecticides and film fungicides. North America is still the dominant market but several factors are combining to bring the North American percentage down, according to Biocide Information. Demand for Biocides is greatest in Brazil, China, India and Russia. As a result, all the main Biocides players are investing significantly in those regions as they offer growth opportunities as per capita income rises and human health issues are accorded more importance.
