This report looks at the global environmental impact of printing devices, and the environmental benefits to be obtained through MPS. We estimate the usage of electricity, convert that to CO2 emissions, and then translate those amounts into commonplace terms such as “is equivalent to avoiding the CO2 emissions of ‘X’ number of cars annually.”

Customers have been made cognizant through commercials, magazines, Internet, and through efforts at work of the importance of Environmental Sustainability. Recently, it was reported by Reuters that, “U.S. business leaders say they support a national carbon-capping program to tackle global warming.” And yet, virtually no attention has been paid to the large number of printer, copier, and MFP devices which are installed in business today. In fact, these devices number well over 100 m So what does sustainability mean for the global fleet? What impact will Managed Print Services (MPS) have on the reduction of this carbon footprint?

This report answers these questions by looking at the global environmental impact of printing devices, and the environmental benefits to be obtained through Man. Based upon the reports forecasts, MPS adoption is growing rapidly and will increase from encompassing 11% of the hardcopy fleet in 2008 to covering over 35% of the hardcopy fleet in 2012. All things being equal, this is the same as taking 304,000 cars off the road. This will save enough energy to power over 230,000 homes for a year! And just imagine the impact if the coverage of devices by MPS agreements increased to 50% instead of 35%. The bottom line is this, while the financial benefits of MPS are massive, the environmental impact is no less significant. This provides another clear driver for the adoption of MPS as a key tool in any organization’s environmental sustainability efforts.
