2009 European Power Plant Managers’ Choice: An Evaluation of the Leading Manufacturers and Service Providers for Critical Power Plant Components
Frost & Sullivan, Dec 2009, Pages: 130
Alternative Fuel Sources Such as Biomass Set to Have a Greater Market Share in the European Power Plants Market
Most power plants in Europe are combined cycle or steam power plants with installed capacities of 100 MW and above. Although natural gas continues to be the most commonly used fuel in power plants, biomass – the alternative or non-conventional fuel source – has a significant market share that is likely to increase with time. 'The power sector is a multi-billion dollar industry with a large implication on infrastructure growth for any country and contributes significantly to countries’ gross domestic product (GDP),' says the analyst of this research. 'Most of power plant equipment manufacturers are global companies, spreading their business across several countries.'
Competition is a common feature amongst the global power plant equipment companies. Alstom is the most featured manufacturer, followed by Siemens and GE. Within the steam turbine market, Alstom and Siemens are fierce competitors for both current usage and brand reputation, dominating other manufacturers. Alstom dominates the European electrical generator market, the boiler market, and the heat recovery steam generator market. For all these categories, Alstom is perceived as the leading market participant by most of the European power plant managers. ABB formerly known as Asea Brown Boveri, dominates the European transformer market in terms of both current usage and overall brand reputation.
The condensers market appears highly competitive, as Alstom, the most used brand currently, garners only one-fifth of the market share. Although GE is the most used brand of gas turbines, Alstom rivals GE’s brand reputation for many of the gas turbine feature categories surveyed. As expected, satisfaction with top used power plant equipment manufacturers is moderately high. However, across all manufacturers, there are various opportunities for improvement, according to their customers. 'The results reveal that in all occasions customers are not completely satisfied with their own brand, irrespective of whether they are a major or minor market participant,' concludes the analyst. 'Hence, top manufacturers should also continually strive to enhance their product offerings to stay ahead of the competition.'
