Decorative and coloured plasters introduce a new fashion in the interior and exterior design and are now highly required. They have been used in the market especially in recent years, in the development of the construction of housing and in the issue of new, modern, thermal insulating systems.

There are several types of decorative plasters: mineral plaster (powder, in 25 kg sacks) and resin based decorative plasters (acrylic, silicone, silicate or mottled stone for basements). The most used are acrylic and mineral decorative plasters.

Preliminary data for 2009 indicate a decrease of apparent domestic consumption to the volume

registered in 2007, meaning 56-57 thousand tones and also a lower value recorded in 2007. Also, in 2009, the decorative plasters dropped by 25% in value term. Over the revised period the highest growth rate was recorded for silicate decorative plasters, this being the younger market. The advantage is that the silicate plasters can be used in both for the renovation of old buildings and to thermal systems and are also waterproof.

Silicone plasters have the added advantage that they have low exposure to dirt.

Preliminary data for 2009 indicate that the top five players account for 60% of volume and 59% of value in the market for decorative plaster based on resins.

The most dynamic players in this segment are Daw Benta and Fabryo and the highest drops of market share were recorded by Policolor and Baumit.

Despite the downturn recorded in 2009 and 2010, the decorative plasters market offer opportunities to growth, pushed up by renovation and thermal rehabilitation programs.
