This research service aims to provide an update on the epidemiology of systemic fungal infection, current diagnostic and treatment practices, as well as market landscape in terms of major participants and future trends. It covers the systemic fungal infection therapeutics market in Singapore.

This Frost & Sullivan research service titled Systemic Fungal Infection Therapeutics Market – Singapore provides competitive structure, market analysis, and future trends for the systemic fungal infection (SFI) therapeutics market. This study aims at supporting the manufacturers in taking decisions with respect to identifying and prioritizing the opportunities in the Singapore market.

Market Overview

Targeted Approaches Attain High Adoption Rates in the Systemic Fungal Infection Therapeutics Market in Singapore

The SFI therapeutics market in Singapore is expected to continue to maintain its upward growth trajectory as a result of the expanding base of potential immuno-compromised patients. With the availability of better diagnostic techniques, the key opinion leaders (KOL) expect an increase in the number of patients diagnosed within the next five years. Early diagnosis of systemic fungal infections has been shown to be critical to treatment outcome. 'The advent of advanced molecular diagnostic technologies, such as Galactomannan has resulted to a shift from empiric and prophylactic therapy to a more targeted and pre-emptive approach,' notes the analyst of this research service. 'Alongside these developments, the high premium on products that are capable of emergent problematic pathogens is poised to transform market dynamics.' Currently, Diflucan oral is commonly prescribed for prophylactic treatment, Diflucan IV for definitive treatment, and Diflucan oral and Conventional Amphotericin B IV for empirical treatment. It is expected that the use of the definitive treatments Cancidas and Vfend IV will increase because of their lower rate of side effects and toxicity to patients.

In terms of diagnostic technology available, physicians expect more fungal culture and serology tests to be utilized in the country. SFI drugs in Singapore may remain expensive, especially with the low presence of generic counterparts. The continuous introduction of new SFI treatment in the country is unlikely to reduce the cost of existing SFI treatments. Although key therapeutics have been in the market to treat the most causative pathogen (Candida Albicans), there is still an unmet need to treat more resistant ones such as Aspergillus. 'As more resistant pathogens in SFI emerge, the focus of treatment is directed toward finding the most appropriate mode of treatment in line with universal criteria, such as risk factors, clinical, radiological, microbiological or other diagnostic evidence,' says the analyst. 'The task is made easier for physicians with the growing availability of non-microbiologic and clinical diagnostic techniques, such as Platelia, Fungitell and PNA FISH, to identify the onset of infection.' Greater emphasis is placed on matching antifungal choice to pathogen susceptibility, heightening the demand for rapid typing of pathogens to ensure informed, targeted drug choices. As a result, there is a reduction in the use of prophylaxis in the ‘at risk’ patient group and empiric therapy in, for example, patients in this group with a persistent fever or other suggestive symptoms.

Considering the niche nature of SFI, it is imperative for key participants to differentiate their products, especially as advances in diagnostic techniques bring about a restriction of prescriptions to specific therapeutic uses. Pharmaceutical manufacturers must position their products to address more specific indications defined by pathogen species and sub species as well as patient population. Drug development for SFI therapeutics must target certain pathogens, rather than a broad spectrum to achieve greater differentiation and protect the drug from generic erosion in the future. The changing epidemiology of causative pathogens has caused the effectiveness of existing therapeutic options to decline. Pharmaceutical manufacturers must develop drugs that address specific indications in terms of pathogen coverage and patient groups, for example solid organ transplant, cancer, neonates, HIV/AIDS, and surgical patients.
