It has been few years Iran Telecommunications Market is experiencing Broadband Communications, thanks to DSL services being offered by national ISPs in large cities of the country. The high ongoing growth in Broadband subscriptions shows a huge demand for broadband and internet among young people and businesses in Iran. Iran with a population over twice as high as any other Middle Eastern countries shows a great potential in different telecoms sector and especially the new emerging broadband technologies as WiMAX and LTE.

Broadband market in Iran is segmented along the same lines as elsewhere in the world. The High-end of the market covers mostly corporate and large businesses and some medium sized business where their activities heavily depend on Internet with monthly ARPUs up to $1000. The Mid-range covers mostly small to medium sized business and some residential users with ARPUs up to 100$ and the Low-end of the market mostly covers residential and some small businesses with the monthly ARPUs up to 25$.

Current broadband users in Iran includes more than a million users by 1Q 2009 but regarding the large number of population, the country still suffers from low penetration comparing to other countries in the region. The forecasts show the broadband penetration could increase tremendously due to the expansion of DSL networks and deployments of WiMAX networks.

Regarding the recent WiMAX tender in Iran, 4 regional WiMAX operators started their activities to provide different types of services including Fixed Telephony, VoIP, Internet, Intranet and Virtual Private Network on WiMAX infrastructure while the Total WiMAX License fee they had to pay for the whole country was more than $100 Million! Previously, 3 other DSL licensees were providing WiMAX services to some businesses in 2 main cities of the country and 2 of them are still active getting more subscribers and having broader coverage in the market.
