During Q1-Q3 2009, the payment system kept running in a steady and efficient way. According to the figures on payment business, the social and economic activities were even more brisk and the funding transactions were further expanding. These all contributed to the soaring volume of payment business, creating an all-time high in terms of payment value. The active operation of payment system directly reflected the development trend in China including strengthened economy recovery momentum, hefty growth in investment, expanded consumption demand and squeezing foreign trade. Therefore, the payment information is playing a more and more important role to measure the operation situation of the national economy operation.

In 2009Q3, China‘s economy sustained growth gradually. Moreover, the social capita dealings further scaled up and the total capital handled in payment system increased rapidly year on year with a new high business value.

With more bank card issuers are emerging, and then the number of bank card holders is also enlarging rapidly. In addition, the debit card issuing is accelerating, while credit card is continually decreased. By the end of the third quarter of 2009, there were 252 Unionpay members, 5 more than the end of the second quarter of the same year. Of these, some 210 were domestic institutions while 42 were overseas institutions. Meanwhile, bank cards accepted environment has increasingly improved, promoting the wide application of bank cars. By the end of the third quarter of 2009, there were 1.4725 million users handing their business through interbank payment system, 2.2734 million POS equipments and 199,600 ATMs, respectively up 122,100 users, 163,300 sets and 9,900 sets quarter-on-quarter.
