Brazil’s consumer electronics devices market, defined as the addressable market for computing devices, mobile handsets and video, audio and gaming products, is estimated at US$20.5bn in 2010. Consumer electronics retailers felt the pressure in 2009 as a result of the economic slowdown, but many retailers expected resumed growth by Q409, due in part to base effects.
The long-term trend remains positive, with demand expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.1% to US$30.1bn by 2014, driven by growing popularity of digital lifestyle products such as LCD TV sets and mobile handsets. Government PC procurement and subsidised handset programmes will also help to support growth. Computers Computer hardware accounted for around 53% of Brazilian consumer electronics spending in 2009. The authors forecast Brazil’s computer hardware sales (including notebooks and accessories) of US$11.0bn in 2010. PC penetration, projected at 29% that year, could climb to 38% by 2014. Computer hardware CAGR for the 2010- 2014 period is forecast at about 12,8%, driven by sales of notebooks and netbooks, which currently account for around 32% of sales.
AV Devices AV devices accounted for around 25% of Brazil’s consumer electronics spending in 2008. Brazil’s domestic AV device market is projected at around US$4.9bn in 2010. Digital TV set sales will be the main driver of a projected 2010-2014 CAGR of 7.4%, with other growth drivers including digital cameras and portable media devices. In 2010, sales of flat screen TV sets should receive a boost from the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Mobile Handsets Mobile handset sales accounted for around 22% of Brazilian consumer electronics spending in 2009. Brazil’s market handset sales are expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.9% to US$5.7bn in 2014, with mobile subscriber penetration passing 100% in 2011. Penetration is still considerably lower than in many other emerging markets and more rural markets will see mobile services arrive over the next five years.
