Chips and Salsa XI: I'll take Category 14 for 21Mbps
Signals Research Group, LLC, April 2010
In this issue of Signals Ahead the publisher provides results from what continues to be the only independent performance benchmark test of HSPA devices and chipsets. With access once again to Spirent test equipment and engineering support, the publisher expanded their benchmark tests to include results for higher category platforms, including HSPA+ (21Mbps), Cat 10 (14.4Mbps) and Cat 9 (10.2Mbps).
Given the highly differentiated information that the publisher provides, this report is critical reading for: - Wireless IC suppliers looking for competitive intelligence on the performance capabilities of their peers, customers, partners, or potential partners - Handset and device manufacturers who what to identify best-in-class chipset performance - Operators who want insight into which chipset/device suppliers offer the most network efficient chipset solutions - Financial institutions who are making short-term or strategic investment decisions - Anyone with a passion for wireless
Specific topics covered in the issue include the following:
- The Solutions. The publisher tested ten solutions representing chipsets from five chipset suppliers. Of the solutions that they tested, six of them were pre-commercial at the time the testing took place with little if any exposure until now outside of the companies supplying them.
- The Tests. In this round of testing the publisher significantly expanded the number of test scenarios. In total there were 56 test scenarios for the Cat 8-10 platforms and 46 test scenarios for the Cat 14 platforms, including both PHY and APP Layer testing. In addition to including several static channel conditions, the publisher used 3 different fading profiles, including PA3, PB3 and VA120, with each channel condition including multiple permutations of test settings.
- The Results. Unlike previous test results, one chipset supplier dominated most of the test scenarios, with a few notable exceptions. The publisher also saw strong improvements from two other suppliers. They provide all results with analysis. In total, the 44 page report includes 15 figures and 21 tables, packed with results and analysis.
- Tracking the Gains. The publisher looks at performance gains over the last four years and provide technical insight into how and why chipset performance has improved dramatically since they began their testing - in some cases they have documented a 2x performance gain for an identical test case.
- Comparing with Real-World Results. The publisher leverage insight from their HSPA+ network testing in Telstra's network to compare and contrast the lab-based results that they obtained with the Spirent test equipment with what they witnessed in a commercial network.
