Omantel Stake Sale

The Omani government is restarting the process of selling a 30% stake in incumbent fixed and mobile operator, Omantel. The sale was originally proposed in 2008 but postponed as a result of the global economic slowdown. Omantel shares the Omani telecoms market with second operator Nawras, which has made strong inroads into the mobile market and is set to launch fixed voice and broadband services in 2010.
Omantel finds itself needing to defend its fixed line subscriber base and maintain strong growth in its broadband subscriber base in the face of imminent competition in this segment from Nawras. In the mobile market, new regulation to allow the introduction of MVNOs, the first of which launched in 2009, has allowed subscriber levels to carry on increasing, despite high penetration. Even in the face of an increasingly competitive environment, Omantel has produced strong financial results. It is likely that many regional operators will be interested in obtaining a stake in an operator which is one of the few opportunities to have emerged in the Middle East in the last 18 months.
