HMV Group Case Study
Verdict Research Limited, April 2010, Pages: 23
This brief contains an analysis of HMV's new 3 year strategy and the Group's prospects for this period and beyond.
Scope:
- Examination of the group's plan to rejuvenate Waterstones
- Analysis of HMV's continued diversification into new products and how it plans to retain authority in traditional entertainment products
- Analysis of what role the move into live music will play in HMV's overall offer
- Evaluation of the significance of the 7digital purchase and the Group's online strategy
Highlights:
The group's plans for Waterstones revolve around an increased focus on its deep range, increasing non-book sales, re-engaging with all customers and improving supply chain efficiency. However, Verdict believes an option is in rebuilding Waterstones' profitability in order to sell it on and use the funds to expand into higher growth areas.
With the books, music, video and video games markets either stagnant or declining and digital growth creating a fresh wave of deflationary pressure, it is undoubtedly the live aspect of the HMV Group's offer which has the brightest prospects.
The key to supporting the store portfolio will be how effectively HMV is able to continue diversifying into new products. In electricals, the brand translates well and will benefit from reducing competition on the high street. However, in clothing, the retailer has a hard task to establish more of a mainstream appeal.
Reasons to Purchase:
- Obtain a thorough understanding of the HMV Group, its strategies and prospects for the future
- Understand the challenges in the entertainment market
- Identify where opportunities for growth on the high street remain
