World Aircraft Towing Tractor Industry 2009
SpecialtyTransportation.net, April 2010, Pages: 42
World Aircraft Towing Tractor Industry 2009: Size, segmentation, trends, growth, competitive shares and industry structure underlying the manufacture of different types of aircraft towing tractors in the world
Aircraft towing tractors (conventional/towbar and towbarless) are an important part of the airport ground support equipment industry. These specially designed low-profile vehicles perform the functions of pushing back an aircraft from its gate, towing the aircraft between its hangar and gate, and towing for maintenance purposes.
The manufacture of this equipment is dominated by major international companies based in Europe and North America, with Asian manufacturing of aircraft towing tractors presently at a nascent stage.
The industry is now witnessing a growing trend of Joint Ventures being set up, in which technology is provided by the North American or European partner and manufacturing undertaken in Asia. Increasingly stringent emission norms on the tarmac have been fueling demand for alternate fuel engines. However diesel remains the preferred choice and currently 80% of aircraft towing tractors are diesel-powered. The study analyzes product characteristics such as industry size (by value and by volume), towing capacities, and future product outlook, including key product/technological innovations. This project involved examination of nearly one-hundred companies in virtually all countries in North America and Europe, along with the developed and emerging economies in the Asia Pacific region, to arrive at a final list of 39 identifiable players that are bona fide manufacturers of aircraft towing tractors.
SVN estimates indicate that the total number of units manufactured globally numbered a couple of thousands, with conventional tractors accounting for about 70% of total production. The top five companies have an estimated production market share of 50% for conventional tractors, while the top five manufacturers in the towbarless segment account for 81% of the total number of units manufactured.
Medium-duty towbarless tugs are the largest application segment by value, with nearly 25% share of total global sales, whereas light-duty towbar tugs are the largest segment by volume, with about 35% of annual production.
These and other aspects of this analysis are highlighted in this pioneering report by SpecialtyVehicles. The report can be put to immediate use for global M&A research, market size identification, sales planning, country/region strategizing, competitive share analysis, and potential alliances through licensing or technology.
