Introduction to Occupational Health in Public Health Practice
Introduction to Occupational Health in Public Health Practice uses concepts of prevention, epidemiology, toxicology, disparities, preparedness, disease management, and health promotion to explain the underlying causes of occupational illness and injury and to provide a methodology to develop cost-effective programs that prevent injury and keep workers safe. Students, health educators, employers, and other health care professionals will find that this essential resource provides them with the necessary skills to develop, implement, and evaluate occupational health programs and forge important links between public health and worker safety.
Introduction to Occupational Health in Public Health Practice is a comprehensive survey of occupational safety and health in the United States, that focuses on recognizing, preventing, and treating work-related and environmentally-induced injuries and diseases. It explores the important linkages between preventive public health approaches and occupational safety and health needs. It covers public health history, epidemiology, communicable diseases, chronic diseases, and environmental and occupational safety and health , but the major contribution of this book is a focus on prevention of injury and illnesses in the workplace.
In keeping with the overall evolution of public health and occupational health practice, the focus of this text is a prevention and preparation approach to occupational safety and health as opposed to a reactive approach. It includes thoughts and ideas on how to merge the two approaches and how a merging of occupational safety and health organizations and public health organizations, at least conceptually, will offer greater benefit to workers and businesses than is currently available from separate approaches.
The book is organized into four parts:
- Foundations on the history of public and occupational health, epidemiology of injuries and illness, toxicology, and the founding and role of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, created by Congress and signed into existence by Richard M. Nixon, to prevent work-related injuries, illnesses, and deaths by issuing and standards for workplace safety and health. - Injury Prevention and Response with applications such as wellness programs, emergency response, ergonomics, workforce, and economic impact of prevention - Special Challenges such as leadership, the workmans compensation environment, and disparities in occupational health - Additional tips on managing programs
