Market Overview
Younger Patient Segment Gives the Orthopaedic Implants Market a Hip Outlook
In the next three to five years, the market for orthopaedic implants in Nigeria and Ghana will be characterised by an increasing number of arthroplasty operations performed on younger patients. Sickle cell disease and trauma are the leading causes of orthopaedic surgery in younger patients. The symptoms of sickle cell disease often manifest at a later stage, by which time, the disease would have destroyed the head of the femur. This creates a need for hip replacement operation and younger patients are now willing to undergo this operation due to the availability of better treatment techniques. “Improved devices and techniques are resulting in high device success rates and enhanced functionality,” says the analyst of this research. “These have, in turn, instilled greater confidence in surgeons and patients, who are increasingly opting for surgery.”
Despite the technological advances registered in west African countries, the costs of joint replacement surgeries are still prohibitive for the majority of patients. The governments of these countries are trying to ease the cost burden on the citizens by investing generously in innovative equipment and constructing new orthopaedic hospitals. They have also increased the budget allocation for state patients, in response to the lengthening waiting lists. Both countries are in the process of implementing national health insurance schemes, although there are operational challenges in their current formats. While reimbursement is still largely unavailable for orthopaedic operations, the planned expansion to cover these and other specialised procedures is expected to drive the sales of orthopaedic implants in future.
The west African orthopaedic market is also battling a shortage of trained orthopaedic surgeons. This shortfall has restricted the number of operations performed and consequently, the adoption of innovative orthopaedic technologies and products. “To increase the uptake of new technologies, manufacturers need to equip local surgeons with the necessary skills and expertise,” notes the analyst. “Along with academic institutions, manufacturers are training local surgeons in new orthopaedic technologies and offering product training.”
