Before the financial crisis, the retail banking market in Central and Eastern Europe had been undergoing a rapid transformation, as banks developed new products, services and channels. The sudden upheaval in the markets has shifted their priorities, and this will modify both short-term and long-term IT strategies and IT investment priorities.

In 2009 many banks targeted branch development and invested in product originations functions. In 2010, however, while banks focus on increased efficiency, there is an increased interest in leveraging more cost-efficient channels as well as existing customer relationships.
As the overall landscape is quite diversified, technology spending is spread across the CEE market. The Polish IT market accounts for around one-third of the analyzed geographic region. Romania is also a relatively sizable market and is expected to develop at faster rate than its peers in the CEE region.
