Indonesia has a number of rich mineral resources including coal, copper and gold and as a result the mining industry was deeply affected by falling metal prices 2009 and a number of projects and investments were suspended in the year. As the global economy experiences a significant recovery in commodity prices, interest has been renewed in mining ventures although, a number of factors continue to instil potential investors with hesitancy.

Corruption remains a key concern within the political and mining sector. In December 2009, it was reported by the Jakarta Post that Bumi Resources was still under investigation for tax evasion, despite settling tax shortfalls in the previous month.
