Shopfitting Market Report Plus 2009
Key Note Publications Ltd, June 2009, Pages: 89
This Market Report analyses the UK shopfitting market, the value of which was estimated to be £2.55bn in 2008, a decrease of 2% on the previous year. The shopfitting market incorporates three main sectors: customised fittings to fit a specific retail premise; standard fittings such as shelving, counters, racking, etc. that are widely used in a range of stores; and display bins/cards, etc. used in various parts of the store.
As well as specialist shopfitters, other types of company also engage in shopfitting. Large building-services companies, for instance, offer interior fit-out services. This type of company is experienced in handling large contracts for other types of premises, e.g. banks, hotels and offices, and generally has strong connections with the building contracting sector. As a result, there is also a market expansion of shopfitters into other types of premises, such as banks, airports and universities.
The shopfitting sector is currently being influenced by a variety of current issues; not least by the economic recession. There is a marked decline in output growth of new build work in the shop/commercial sector.
As the recession becomes more widespread, retail stores are closing, thus reducing the scope for shopfitting in existing premises. Many traditional shops have closed, and low-price stores have increased their presence on the high street. Although this helps consumers, the shopfitting requirements of these stores are far more basic than those of most of the shops they replace. The presence of discount supermarket stores is also increasing, but their selling strategy does not require elaborate store fit-outs.
In the future, the shopfitting sector can expect to experience difficulties until the economy recovers. Large retail stores are buying up some of the recently closed shops. This means that contracts for shopfitting are most likely to be won by large companies capable of handling multi-store projects for large retailers.
Government forecasts indicate that an upturn in the economy could be expected in 2010, but at present there appears to be little evidence of this. Unemployment is now rising, a factor that will continue to hold back consumer spending in shops. Taking into account these trends, the author anticipate a fall in shopfitting activity until positive signs of an economic upturn are evident.
