Catering Equipment Market Report 2009
Key Note Publications Ltd, May 2009, Pages: 99
In 2008, the UK market for catering equipment was worth £659m at manufacturers' selling prices (msp). This represented an 8.2% increase on 2004 and a 1.3% decline on 2007.
The catering equipment market, as defined in this Market Report, is divided into five main sectors: cooking equipment; food-handling equipment; food-preparation equipment; refrigeration equipment; and other catering equipment. These products are used to store, prepare, cook, display and serve food; and to wash food, utensils and crockery. In 2007, cooking equipment and food-handling equipment were the two largest sectors of the market.
The recession in the UK is having an impact on the catering sector and this is, in turn, affecting demand for catering equipment. A number of the leading catering equipment manufacturers and suppliers have reported that market conditions worsened noticeably in the second half of 2008. As a result, several suppliers subsequently reduced their output and cut their staffing levels. However, some sectors of the catering market do appear to be suffering from the downturn more than others. A number of the leading pub chains and pub-restaurants chains, for example, have reduced their capital expenditure programmes and scaled back their new outlet opening schedules, whereas several of the leading fast-food chains are continuing with their ambitious outlet expansion plans.
New product development (NPD) is a key driver of demand for catering equipment, and much of the current focus is directed towards developing equipment and products that help operators comply with hygiene, health and safety regulations and with current environmental legislation and requirements. In an era of high energy costs, much new product emphasis is also directed towards developing equipment that uses less energy, less water and less usage of cooking inputs such as oil. Technological developments in the area of dishwashers, for example, have also resulted in lower levels of water usage, less energy requirements and reduced annual running costs.
The market for catering equipment is likely to prove difficult again in 2009. Some of the main buyers of catering equipment are forecasting a contraction in the eating-out market in 2009 and this is expected to have a negative impact on demand for new catering equipment. All sectors of the catering equipment market are expected to be affected by the downturn and market conditions in 2010 could well continue to be difficult and affect the potential for market growth in that year. On current assessments, it may be 2011 before any measurable recovery in market demand is witnessed.
