The product structuring guidelines, in addition to providing Shariah guidelines for designing the Bank’s credit policy in this respect, is designed to act as a catalyst in launching the Bank into the very competitive world of Shariah-compliant financing.

The guide has a logical process flow beginning with the explanation of Islamic contracts used in wholesale banking, including conceptual framework and definition, and then walks one through its essential features and principles, comparing and contrasting them with its conventional or interest-based counterpart.

The structuring guide then explains the theoretical concepts of Islamic financing contracts through various carefully designed and structured case studies for the proposed Islamic products i.e. E/V/M, Commercial Real Estate and Working Capital Financing. These case studies cover day-to-day wholesale banking operations of a regular Islamic Bank.

Each case section outlines the basic background followed by potential transaction types. The case studies follow a consistent pattern explaining the case transaction, followed with its graphical transaction flow, structuring guidelines, potential risks and mitigants associated with the said transaction and the documents involved as per Shariah requirements.

No write-up of this nature can be complete without a sufficient exposition of the potential risks and its mitigants, for that the Bank’s Board and its executives will play a vital role in formulating their credit and risk policies to successfully implement these Islamic products and services.
