Why another dermatopathology book? Dermatopathology is a subspecialty that requires, to a great extent clinicopathologic correlation to arrive at a correct diagnosis. It is also the basis of understanding skin diseases. Virtually all the atlases in dermatopathology have been in print format; they served well in the pre-electronic era. This electronic text has been written with the conviction that computer technology can be a powerful tool in learning of dermatopathology.

While no text can replace hands on teaching and learning with a microscope, an interactive electronic text can act as a surrogate tutor that is available anywhere and at any time. Among the many advantages of an electronic atlas is the ease of usage. The entire content comprising 5,000 images and 10,000 links is on a single CD, which can be readily transported from place to place. A particular feature of this atlas is interactivity. The reader can move effortlessly from one topic to another, view images by a mere click of the mouse, and search any word or topic without having to go to the index and flipping pages. Moreover, a student can also use this atlas to test his/her knowledge by viewing the images in the test mode, without the legends, and then review the images with legends. We have strived to make the quality of digital images as close as possible to the images seen under the microscope. For most topics, scanning, low, medium and high-power microphotographs have been provided to simulate a real microscopic examination. Because many so called typical histologic features are not very common, we have tried to illustrate both common and uncommon features of the various diseases.

It is our hope that this atlas will prove to be a useful learning tool both for students, as well as for practitioners of dermatopathology. Despite our efforts, we suspect that some errors have remained in the atlas. For that we offer our sincere apologies. We hope that the users will alert us to these errors and also provide any comments that will aid in the improvement of future editions of this atlas.

A landmark resource in dermatopathology containing over 5,000 color images (clinical & microphotographs), 44 chapters, 10,000 links, and 1,000 topics. The Atlas is useful not only for dermatology residents and dermatopathology fellows preparing for their boards, but also for experienced practitioners of dermatopathology as a resource
