Anthrax is a zoonotic disease caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis. The disease most commonly occurs in mammals (e.g., cattle, sheep, goats, camels, antelope. Anthrax occurs in humans when they are exposed to infected animals or tissue from infected animals or when they are directly exposed to B. anthracis, e.g. by intentional contamination. Depending on the route of infection, anthrax disease can occur in three forms: cutaneous, gastrointestinal, and inhalation.

Currently approved anthrax vaccines in the US and in the UK are Anthrax Vaccine Absorved (AVA) and Anthrax Vaccine Precipitated (AVP), respectively, require a subcutaneous six-dose primary immunization schedule. The complex vaccination scheme, local injection site reactions, the limited spectrum of protective efficacy and the threat of the use of anthrax as a biological weapon urged governments to sponsor considerable efforts to develop novel vaccines and therapeutic antibodies against anthrax. As a result, the development pipeline substantially has grown over the last years with next generation molecules.

The report includes a compilation of currently active projects in development of vaccines, antibodies and small molecules targeting Bacillus anthracis for prophylaxis and treatment of anthrax. In addition, the report lists company-specific R&D pipelines of Anthrax Vaccines & Therapeutics. Competitor projects are listed in a tabular format providing information on:

- Drug Codes,
- Target / Mechanism of Action,
- Class of Compound,
- Company,
- Product Category,
- Indication,
- R&D Stage and
- additional comments with a hyperlink leading to the source of information.
